Mexican Riviera Cruise

October 25, 2002
8 Nights aboard Carnival's colossal "Spirit"

We will be sailing to these exciting ports:

Acapulco, Zihuatanejo/Ixtapa, Manzanillo.

The "Spirit"  sails out San Diego which means that you can enjoy cruising without having to put up with the hassle of flying.

When we board the "Spirit" she will be old enough to have the kinks worked out, but still new enough to not have any marks or gouges in her brightwork. She is enormous at 88,500 tons. Her center showroom, the "Atrium," is 8 stories high.  She is configured so that 80% of her staterooms are ocean views, and roughly 80% of those cabins are with verandas, hence the fantastic prices reflecting a great bargain for those wanting to experience the luxury of an outside stateroom.

Dining starts with the traditional assigned seating in the Empire Restaurant, casual dining in the La Playa Grill, endless buffets, including the traditional Midnight Buffet, 24 hour pizzeria,  to an optional extra charge reservations-only Supper Club for that special celebration.

There are Vegas style shows every night. Dancing and music listening in several lounges.  Health club, jogging track, two swimming pools, wading pool, ping pong, shuffleboard,  library,  card room, and full casino with slot machines. Of course bingo is a constant happening and the shipboard horse race will also be present.  First run movies shown daily.

Although your cruise is in Mexican waters and most casual, you will have an opportunity to dress up for the Captains Gala Dinner and Cocktail Party. The cost of your cruise includes most of your amenities. All of the food except the optional dining. All of your beverages such as coffee, tea, milk, juices. Spirits, wines, beer, and soft drinks are part of your running bar bill that you have during the length of the cruise. Carnival does have a Soft Drink Ticket that can be purchased on board the ship. The credit is good for the length of the cruise and is a one time charge per person. It can offer quite a savings for the youngsters.  Other extra's available would be dry cleaning, beauty salon, and endless photographs. The ships photographers do an excellent job of taking professional shots during the entire cruise. You need only to select the memories you wish to cherish. The brochures do list many of the optional items as well as a directory furnished in you cabin. The expected gratuities for those who serve you  on a 8 night cruise, for a family of two, will cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $150.

There are many different shore excursions available, including trips to ancient ruins and pyramids. The cost of these tours vary and there are always talks given beforehand of the different offerings at each port of call. These lectures offer good shopping tips for each port as well.

As you may have ascertained, you can enjoy a cruise for just about the price of the cruise itself, for the budget minded. Or you can enjoy a lot of extras for a few hundred dollars more. When you consider what the whole package offers compared to the equivalent landed package including all transportation and meals, it makes a cruise a tremendous value, and you don't have to keep packing and unpacking at each new location. WOW!!!!

This is a cruise tailored for a family. Let me say that Bonnie and I are very impressed with Carnival's "Camp Carnival." Supervised activity for all ages, from tots to teens. Bonnie and I were recently on the "Inspiration" out of the port of New Orleans. We spent 7 nights with our daughter, her husband, and our 6 grandchildren. Ages were 5 thru 17 years. We only saw the youngsters at mealtime. The teens had their own lounge with their favorite music. Even the 5 year old was at "Camp Carnival" much of the time which allowed her parents to spend time enjoying the shows and other pastimes. The kids absolutely enjoy the pizza parties, wading pool games, including a huge spiral  waterslide. Wait till they see "Children's World" which is available only on the biggest of Carnival's ships such as the "Spirit."
